Janet has been making music from the time she banged on a xylophone in her Carl Orff toddler classes at the University of Toronto in the early 60’s.  What followed was a fascination with a succession of instruments including the piano, violin, flute, guitar, voice and finally a serious studying of the French horn. She studied jazz at Humber College before receiving a Bachelor of Music degree from Queen’s University in the mid 80’s.

Janet has been writing and performing music since she was a teenager and has played in many local bands including The New View, The Elaine Dark Band, Groovy G, Is My Slip Showing, Have Mercy, Disco Dyke Divas and most recently the Janet Whiteway Band.  She also spent several years behind the piano bar at Trax and singing jazz with her good friend and incredibly talented pianist, Ron Davis.

Janet’s influences include Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, Sly Stone, El Vez, Jean Deeth and her current favorite Rufus Wainwright.
